The Secret to Overcome Limiting Beliefs

There’s a secret you need to know that just might push you to break through: your limiting beliefs are holding you back. No matter the goal you’re striving for, limiting beliefs are related to your state of mind that can hinder progression. Here’s what you need to know:

What Are Limiting Beliefs?

Limiting beliefs are thoughts or opinions you have about a certain topic that you believe are the truth. These can have a negative impact if you tend to have negative thoughts about yourself and your capabilities. If you truly believe that you cannot do something, then you will not put forth the effort necessary to continue to move forward, grow, and meet your goals in your personal and professional life.

This can also be known as “imposter syndrome.” If you feel that you aren’t qualified, then you will believe it and live that reality! This also tends to have ties to perfectionism.

Best Limiting Beliefs Examples

Here are some examples of limiting beliefs you need to ditch today:

  • I can’t do this
  • I am not old enough
  • I am not young enough
  • I don’t have enough time
  • I am not smart enough
  • I don’t have enough money
  • No one cares what I think
  • I don’t have ___
  • I will never ___
  • I don’t deserve ___

There are so many more, but these are some common examples! Anything of the nature that states “I can’t” is a recipe for stalled success.

The Secret to Overcome Limiting Beliefs

Pause

The secret to overcoming these limiting beliefs that are truly keeping you from moving toward success is awareness. If you aren’t aware that you have these beliefs, then you won’t be able to address it!

A great exercise for this is the act of “pausing” and taking a moment to reflect. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or thinking something along the lines of “I can’t do _____ because _____,” then you need to ask yourself why. Why do you feel this way?

Reflect

Once you pause and realize you have a limiting belief, then you should reflect on it. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does this make sense?
  • Is this true about me?
  • Is it accurate?
  • What caused me to have this thought?
  • Is this belief serving me?
  • Would I tell this belief to someone else?

Re-Wire

When you recognize that this statement is a limiting belief, then you can work to “re-wire” that thought by replacing it with a positive affirmation. Positive affirmations are positive statements to reinforce in your brain that you are capable of doing anything that you set your mind to. It simply changes your “I can’t do this” to “I can do this and ____.” Fill in the blank!

When you do this over time, you consistently replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Over time, you will be “crowding out” the negative beliefs where they are no longer welcome!
