The number one way you can get your life together is by creating routines. This sounds so simple, but it can be life-changing! You see, our body loves homeostasis. This is the scientific word for staying the same or balanced. Anything that puts us out of balance or the normal is hard, so our bodies try to keep us there.
The problem with this is if you’re wanting to make a bunch of life changes at once, then you’re pushing your body further out of balance with each new habit or goal you’re trying to achieve. Your body and mind don’t like change! The remedy is creating sustainable routines since we are creatures of habit. With routines, the goal is to reduce the barriers between you and success.
Create Routines
How do you create routines? The key is keeping it simple and realistic so that you can stick to it. First, you need to decide what needs to be in your routine. What daily or weekly tasks will get you to your goals? If you’re setting small, attainable goals to meet your big goal, then you should have an idea of what to do to get there.
Next, you’ll need to plan your routines. Plug-in tasks into your morning, evening, or weekly routines. Try moving them around in a way that makes sense. An example would be having a shower in the morning AFTER you exercise, not BEFORE.
Your next step should be to commit. Building habits takes time, so commit to doing these tasks every day. If you want to exercise every morning, then lay out your activewear the night before. Do everything you can to remove obstacles! Preparation here is key.
Last, you need to hold yourself accountable. If you have some way to track your progress, it will keep you ready for more. Create a habit or routine tracker and try to consistently fill it in every day. Try not to break the chain!
Create an Action Plan
Creating an action plan is the most important part. You know that there will be some days that you just don’t feel like sticking to your routine. Motivation will come and go, so you need to be prepared for those days you just aren’t feeling it.
Create an action plan with steps of how you will achieve these goals, stick to your routines, possible barriers to your success, and your plan to take action against these barriers. Remember, the more you plan, the more likely you are to stick with it!
